Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija 'pere April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most famous performers of the Mexican-American community of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", which was inspired by Latin music and Latin albums. Because of her clothing choices, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. Her fashion choices makes her among the top Latin artists. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was frequently critiqued for singing Tejano music which was a male-dominated music genre. She was also refused bookings in Texas venues. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained popularity. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989. Her debut album was self-titled and released the following year. Her brother became her primary music producer as well as songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) was a top album, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive month. The album's success in the commercial market has led critics to label it the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a big hit and was her most-loved tune. Live! (1993) was awarded Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to be awarded this distinction. Amor Prohibido became one the most sold Latin albums in America in 1994. It was praised by critics as being responsible for Tejano music's debut as a marketable genre because it became one the most well-known Latin music subgenres at the time.
